L6 Negotiated term 2

L6 Final project:

Microscopic Utopian

Set up in Waterhall:

My first set up plan:

I plan to set up three piece of pictures in water hall for my final show. I was try to print out some different sizes for my final pictures.(eg: A1, A2, A4) and try to put them on the wall.

My topic is about the microworld, so in the first time I want to try the A4 size.  I just think the A4 size is really small, if I use this size, will be very relevant to my idea. But after that I was changed my mind. I thought my idea is discover a microworld and then can show the details to people. But if I still use the small size, my show will does not make sense.  After that, I was try to use the A2 size. In water hall, the walls are much taller than the college one. I felt the A2 size was also too small for that wall. In the end, I was chose the A1 size for the show in water hall. That size is much better.
I don't want to use the photo frame for my pictures. Because I don't like let the framework to give my pictures any limitations. If I can, I hope paint my wall for black colour. The reason is: 1. My images style is about vivid colors and warm tones. Use the black background will better than the white background to bring out the colors in the picture bright and conflict. 2. My topic is about the microworld. I want to give people the feeling like to discover another world. Black can give people a sense of mystery. In the darkness feel like digging into a whole new world.

My final set up plan:

I use the photography to present my work. I think the photography can give people the sense of reality.
Quantity and Size:
I will set up three piece of pictures on the wall for my final show. I when to Birmingham museum saw many different  kind of sizes for set up. In the end I chose the A2 size for my final set up in water hall.

Paper:
I will use the glossy paper for print out my pictures.
I don't need to use the photo frame for my pictures. Because I don't like let the framework to give my pictures any limitations.
Lighting:
I would like my photos being displayed in light condition.

Work show:

I chose three different colors of the photographs last show. This three picture colors are red, yellow and green. Their sense of color contrast and picture settings bed varies, showing a picture of the effect also distinctive. Different bed represents a different feeling, I want different types of people can find their corresponding suitable bed, on the bed to create a dream like fairyland, go to the utopia which in their mind.

 I

I will still go on the work for the last term.  The topic is still about  the microscopic world.

In the summer holiday, I observed the bushes near my house. And then I discoved when I put my head into the bushes to observe and take the photos, the bushes will change to another world in the eyes.I think we can see the different world through a different perspective, this idea is very interesting for me. So I started to design an imaginary world.

My perspective on the microscopic world. I want to explore the world of scenery every day we ignore. Perhaps change the macro perspective, there will be new discoveries and surprises. I believe that in this world,  the small corner can lurk wonderful, just the fact that we are able to find them.

I have attempted to create a microscopic utopian world environment by imagining magical hidden places unnoticed by the everyday world.
I use models to create fantasy living spaces and bright and rich colours to express the unreal and dreamlike nature of my fantastical worlds.My perspective on the microscopic world. I want to explore the world of scenery every day we ignore. Perhaps change the macro perspective, there will be new discoveries and surprises. I believe that in this world,  the small corner can lurk wonderful, just the fact that we are able to find them.I have saw a France film about micro-word before. The film's name is 'Microcosmos' , this film is more driven me to interest in created the project for micro-world. And I still will like last term to create a utopia world, but I plan change the character in the image. Last time the character in my image is ladybird, this time I want to let the human to be character.

I still plan go on this topic from last project is because I think the utopia and microscopic world are both really big themes for me.

My utopian is same with last project belong to the Ecology utopian. Ecological utopia describes new ways in which society should relate to nature. They react to a perceived widening gap between the modern western way of living that destroys nature and the traditional way of living that is thought to be more in harmony with nature. According to the Dutch philosopher Marius de Geus, ecological utopias could be sources of inspiration for green political movements. Many artists have done work on Utopia, but few people to Utopia and the microscopic world linked to do our work.I think if this time I was able to in-depth research utopia, and it uses a two-dimensional way and the microscopic world combined, will be a good breakthrough.

In this project, I set up the microscopic world utopia like a dreamland. In my imaginary, our humans are used to live in this microworld utopia. Just when we are evolving more and more powerful, we dominate the larger world. And then the human forgot the place where we used to live.  People are become more and more greedy and do the invention and destruction. In the actual world when people feel tired and sad. They will looking forward a better place like a utopia. In this utopia, there are many different kind of plants and ornaments in it. I set up different beds in my images, As a symbol of the beginning of a dream. I imaginary the sad and tired people can dream a beautiful place and get comfort in the bed. In their dream, they can back to the place where they used to live`--the microworld utopia.

Research:

Akira Korosawa:

I saw the artist Akira Korosawa's work, in his dream story there had been a nuclear holocaust which resulted in the loss of nature and animals, in another of his dreams he explained that the ideal enviromet was one with no technology or convenience where everyone believed in and celebrated nature.

In his Van Gogh one, the character steps in     and out of paintings - turning these ideal  environments into microscopic worlds. Changing the size of the environment. Making us all feel like it would be possible to step into a picture and into our dreams - this is what I would like my work to achieve.

Gregory Euclide:

I use Photoshop get some more natural details in the images, make the photo's feeling like a dreamlike place.

The first show:

Tutors felt these photos not like the utopia, contrary feel like the dystopia. They told me, I should make the image more bright and colourful. And also need get some more details in the image. Make the photo looks crazy.

Research:

Vincent Bousserez:

See the world through the eyes of miniature people. The "PLASTIC PEOPLE" Flickr set by Vincent Bousserez shows us some beautiful scenes from another point of view, where the  world seems as ordinary as our very own but in a smaller scale.

Santiago Lorenzo:

Minimiam:

Minimiam meaning “Mini Yum” is a creative union of husband and wife who create tiny worlds of food with their little people doing their little chores here. Akiko Ida is Japanese and Pierre Javelle is French. They met studying photography at the Paris “Arts Decoratifs” art school.
Since childhood, Akiko has always been attracted to the world of gastronomy. As a child, she elaborated and baked different sorts of bread which she subsequently photographed and classified in a notebook. At the same time, she invented tiny characters that filled entire pages of her journal. Akiko became a renowned Food Photographer, and has already taken part in more than 30 cookbooks.
Piere hails from Burgundy. He grew up on a comics diet. Attracted by drawing, illustrations and photography, art school was his refuge. The likes of Doisneau and Cartier-Bresson were major influences in his choice of photography as a medium.

Tim Walker:

Tim Walker’s photographs have entranced the readers of Vogue, month by month, for over a decade. Extravagant staging and romantic motifs characterise his unmistakable style. After concentrating on photographic stills for 15 years, Walker is now also making moving film.
On graduation in 1994, Walker worked as a freelance photographic assistant in London before moving to New York City as a full time assistant to Richard Avedon. On returning to England he initially concentrated on portrait and documentary work for UK newspapers. At the age of 25 he shot his first fashion story for Vogue, and has continued to work to much acclaim ever since.
The Victoria & Albert Museum and the National Portrait Gallery in London include Walker’s photographs in their permanent collections.
Walker staged his first major exhibition at the Design Museum, London in 2008. This coincided with the publication of his book ‘PICTURES’ published by teNeues.
In 2008 Walker received the ‘Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator’ from The British Fashion Council. In 2009 he received an Infinity Award from The International Center of Photography in New York. In 2012 Walker received an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal Photographic Society.
In 2010 Walker’s first short film, ‘The Lost Explorer’ was premiered at Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland and went on to win best short film at the Chicago United Film Festival, 2011.
2012 saw the opening of Walker’s ‘STORY TELLER’ photographic exhibition at Somerset House.
The exhibition coincides with the publication of his new book, ‘STORY TELLER’ published by Thames and Hudson.

Tim Walker's work give me a lots of ideas. I learn from his picture with color, I like his rich picture effects, and superior imagination. I think he's a lot of work has emerged a utopian effect, he gave me a very good research.

Sayaka Maruyama:

This is a good research for dystopia.
